Part of Liberty's 'Aesthetic Renaissance' collection which celebrates the life and vision of the company's founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty. One of the original merchant adventurers Arthur Liberty introduced the fascinating, exotic design ideas he had encountered to the emerging aesthetic movement, of which Liberty became a central pillar. Supplementing the inspiration found in far flung locales are designs which derive from Arthur Liberty's love of the English countryside into which he escaped upon leaving the buzz of the London store. 'Lido' is a collage which cleverly produces a highly pleasing abstract effect from figurative elements. Swimmers dive, topple, bomb, launch and extend gracefully amidst semi-transparent droplets which produce secondary colours as they overlap. The Aesthetic Movement meets early Modernism. I think this is a really accomplished design - playful yes, but also very sophisticated. Design at its best. The colours and contrast are delightful. A shirt which pays tribute to the world of vintage botanical illustrations. I find the care, in fact, devotion, to the subject one finds in these artworks compelling. This one features some clustered fruits, the seed head of a poppy, pea pod, pine cone and other forms of fecund, final development. Bright, rich reds feature prominently, along with coppery greens, umber and ochre tones. Very beautiful. 'Jagger' single button cuff.
