Pull the leg to extend but try not to pull too far. On each leg there is a clearly marked "stop" to advise of its maximum recommended extension length. To then lock the leg, turn clockwise but please do not over-tighten. Once fully extended the largest diameter leg features a height guide for reference. If you do pull the leg out of the unit it can be reinserted, but try to avoid doing it.This clever locking and unlocking mechanism works like most others on the market so its not a design fault. Just be careful when extending the legs and you'll be fine we promise. We are aware that the compass is not particularly accurate and we would suggest that you do not depend on its accuracy, but it looks nice and does act as a protective cover for the tripod screw.
