Athlone Castle has a striking presence in the heart of the Co. Westmeath town which resonates with the 800 years of history it encompasses. It was owned at times by either the Dillons or by the O'Kellys, two rival families. It was also residence of the lord presidents of Connacht in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Jacobite central defence during the seiges of Athlone in the 1690s. It was a military barracks for almost 300 years. In 1967, the Old Athlone Society set up a museum in the castle and two years later it became a public monument.  The castle and visitor centre was reopened in November 2012 following extensive refurishments. There are now eight galleries chronicling the history of the town, the castle and the people of Athlone. Test replica weapons, try interactive games and take photographs dressed in period costumes! Step back in time and discover the history of Athlone through a series of interactive and audio visual exhibitions. Explore the coveted artefacts that range from pre-historic settlers to modern Athlone. Learn about the first 400 years of the castle. The adventurous will make a beeline for Pure Rafting with its rapids, whirlpools and peaceful backwaters. There’s a whole universe of water attractions for the family at Aqualand, a world of waterslides of all types and heights to thrill and relax you; your kids will have the time of their lives. You’ll find vibrant attractions such as the Grand Canyon, the Black Hole or the Twister, and other more relaxing ones including Jacuzzis, Tropical Lake and Lake Niagara.  There are more than 30 slides to choose from at this themed water park with swimming pools to keep the little ones entertained while you relax in the sun. Or maybe you could chill in one of the whirlpools and when you need a rest from all the excitement, lie down in the landscaped gardens. The private house offers a place to relax with its own private balcony overlooking the park. Each villa has a jacuzzi on the terrace, sun-beds, a solarium, a shower, towels, fan, sofa and TV. Also included is a fully stocked mini bar with soft drinks, beer and snacks. The private house offers excellent value for money and need to be booked well in advance. With fantastic views over the water park, the house provides a private place to relax in your own hammocks. Your ticket includes food, drinks, snacks and fast track entrance to the park plus fast track to the attractions. This has to be the best way to enjoy a VIP experience! Conditions: Children under 3 years of age do not count for a seat. Each facility has a minimum price established for 6 people. Each extra person (up to 4) must pay an additional cost. Valid Photo ID is required for entry with each booking - You will be refused entry if your ID does not match the stated visitor name.
