The landscapes range from the white beaches of Rowley Shoals, to the muddy mangrove flats of Kununurra. Perth Coast Stunning white sandy beaches of the metropolitan coast flow underwater into a shallow sandy seafloor dotted with seagrass beds, reefs and island. Originaly formed dueing the ice age, the reefs have now been worn by the water and waves, creating a marine matrix of crevices, caves and swim throughs. Shipwreck Coast Travel on the largest conveyor belt in Australia to explore AQWA's Shipwreck Coast, through an underwater tunnel. The aquarium you travel through is the largest single aquarium in Australia, which holds THREE MILLION litres of water! Great Southern Dip into the icy waters of the Great Southern, where waves and wind from Antartica shape isolated granite shores.
The old port in Fira is accessible only: By cable car: It is perfectly safe, it consists of 6 wagons and has capacity of 6 persons per wagon. During high season (April-October) it runs every 20 minutes. Single tickets cost €5 for adults and €2.50 for children. On foot: You would need to walk down the famous 600 steps of the traditional road that connects the old port with the town of Fira. The descend takes about 20-30 minutes, depending on your physical condition. By donkey: The donkeys used to be the traditional transportation way of the island. They go up and down to the old port of Fira frequently. A single ride costs around €5 per person and takes about 20 minutes. Most people prefer to take the donkey on their way up.

There are many attractions here for both day-trippers and people who want to visit for longer. Transport Options Inis Oirr also has a good selection of transport options: Mini-bus guided tour Pony and trap guided tour Hire a bicycle Eat & Stay Inis Oirr has a number of places for it’s visitors to enjoy good local food, from locally caught and sourced seafood, to the freshly baked brown bread made each and every day. There is also a good number of Bed & Breakfasts on the island, as well as a hotel, guesthouse, campsite and hostel. Historical Sites Stone Fort – Dun Formna, built near the highest point on the island, contains O’Brien’s Castle within it’s wall Churches – Cill Gobnait, Cill na n-Seacht Inion and St. Caomhan (St.Kevin’s) Church, the latter is a spectacular ruin, located in the graveyard on Inis Oirr. Over the years, sand has been blown in and around the church to make it appear as if it has sunk into the ground. Recent History – The Plassey Shipwreck is a famous landmark on Inis Oirr, she wrecked here in March 1960. Read more about in in our Blog. The Palace briefly served as the headquarters of Bonnie Prince Charlie during the 1745 uprising.
