Glasnevin Cemetery was established in 1828. An award winning museum was built in 2010 containing a café, shop, interactive exhibitions, genealogy section, and function space. Glasnevin is the largest cemetery in Ireland with over 1.5 million people buried there including many historical icons and regular Dubliners. Daniel O'Connell, the liberator and cemetery founder, whose monument tower is the tallest in Ireland, lies in a decorative crypt. Glasnevin now operates as a Tourist attraction in Dublin, its guided tours being particularly successful. It also continues to operate as a fully functioning facility for burials and cremations.  Tours include a visit to Daniel O'Connell's Crypt. The tours are 1 1/4 hours and the museum is self guided. The O'Connell Tower is now open to visitors! You can now clumb the O'Connell Tower - Ireland's yallest round tower for the first time in over 45 years. As you pass through the ornate crpyt of Daniel O'Connell, you begin the journey to the top of the monument built in his honour. After a comprehensive restoration programme, the staircase in the tower is now accessible, complete with an exhibition about the legendary figure himself and the fascinating history pf the tower.
