A former convent and theatre, the Liceu hasn't always resembled the opera house we see today. Its history is full of ups and downs and mysteries that make this cultural icon a key venue which we invite you to discover on a guided tour of the building. You'll walk through its most representative areas, starting with the historic lobby, in the eclectic Catalan Renaixement style. From there, you'll continue to the auditorium, an exact replica of the impressive horseshoe-shaped hall designed by the architect Miquel Garriga i Roca in 1847. You'll go up to the Hall of Mirrors, an imposing room with a ceiling decorated with allegorical paintings and texts referring to art and music. You'll discover the new foyer, the area where people used to relax during the interval and currently a multi-purpose room which hosts small-scale performances. You can also visit the Cercle del Liceu, a private club and one of the most important examples of Catalan and Spanish art nouveau.

This summer see more than a dozen species of seahorses, seadragons, and their relatives in the Horses and Dragons exhibits. Pacific seahorses native to our local area are on display in the first floor Southern California/Baja gallery, a trumpetfish is included in the Gulf of California exhibit on the second floor, and various species of seahorses, seadragons, pipefish, razorfish, and other animals from this family are on display in the Tropical Pacific gallery. The longsnout seahorse (also known as the slender seahorse) and dwarf seahorse have never before been exhibited at the Aquarium. Visitors will learn how these animals are bred and cared for at the Aquarium, see babies, and learn about the conservation issues these animals face in the wild, including harmful fishing practices, the traditional medicine and curio trade, and habitat loss. Does not include Behind the Scenes Tour or Turtle Vision 4D movie Café Scuba, serving a variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, pizza, and more, provides a relaxed atmosphere overlooking our Seals & Sea Lions exhibit and is the perfect place to grab a meal or a quick snack. In 1762, John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, had his hands full, literally. As First Sea Lord, he commanded the mighty British Navy, was a noted explorer, and also a dedicated gambler with a love of day long card games. This led to little time for food, so he came up with the ingenious idea (some say at the card table) of putting meat between two slices of bread. From then on it did not matter if you were fighting a great sea battle or laying down a Royal Flush, you could eat great food without too much fuss. Thus in 1762, the sandwich was named after its inventor, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Now 250 years later, the current 11th Earl and the Sandwich family remain passionate about the world's most popular quick food that carries their name and have developed the sandwich everyone has been waiting for… THE WORLD'S GREATEST HOT SANDWICH® Their hot signature sandwiches are at the heart of the menu. Their beef is slow roasted in-house and freshly carved. All of their hot sandwiches are made to order using high quality fresh ingredients and served on their very own artisan baked loaf and topped with unique sauces and spreads.
