Anisum stellatum La badiane, appelee aussi anis etoile, est le fruit d un arbre de la meme famille que les magnolias. Arbre toujours vert, qui peut atteindre 15 metres de haut, il pousse dans la region situee de part et d autre de la frontiere entre le Vietnam et la Chine. En persan ldquo;badianrdquo;, signifie anis, et, en effet l anis et la badiane ont en commun le fait de contenir de l anethol. En Chine meme, elle est connue surtout comme plante medicinale, mais c est aussi l une des rares epices utilisees dans la cuisine chinoise. On n a cependant pas trouve de traces de l utilisation de la badiane avant le seizieme siecle, c est-a-dire a l epoque ou les europeens ont decouvert cette plante. En effet, Thomas Cavendish, dit ldquo;Le navigateurrdquo;, qui fit le tour du monde en 1587, a semble-t-il le premier, rapporte des graines de badiane en Europe.
