The Aerosus air supply system at OEM quality is suitable for all BMW 5 E61 series models, which were manufactured in the period from 2003 until 2010. The delivery of the air supply system includes: the compressor, the matching double valve, as well as the suction hose and filter. The components mentioned are already preassembled on a stainless steel plate. This corresponds exactly to the fitting of the original and can be put into operation immediately thanks to the simple plug & play procedure. In addition, the corresponding relay is also included. This must be replaced when changing the air supply system and is located in the trunk, under the spare wheel well. The actual compressor is attached to the rear of the car, at the bottom, right behind the wheel arch liner. The BMW 5 Series E 61 -- Brief Introduction The BMW 5 Series E61 is the estate version of the fifth generation of the BMW 5 Series and was built between 2003 and 2010. Despite being sportier, the upper middle class vehicle is considered one of the safest in its class. The optional air suspension with level control ensures appropriate driving comfort. In 2007, the car received a facelift, in which the E61 was slightly modified both visually and technically. The Functioning of an Air Suspension The air springs of a suspension provide the level control. This keeps the vehicle at a constant level during trailer operation or with different loads and also ensures sufficient ground clearance. For the air suspension and the level control to work, the system must be operated via a compressed air compressor. The task of the compressor is to supply the level control and the air suspension with compressed air. Instructions for a Proper Repair Since not only the individual components of the compressor but also all other parts of the air supply system are subject to normal wear, it sometimes makes sense to replace the entire system. In particular, the solenoid valve often wears off over time, as it often turns on and off in case of a defective compressor. The suction hose can become porous over the years and should then be replaced as quickly as possible. In order to minimise the costs for the consecutive problems and to avoid several workshop visits, we offer you the air supply system as a complete kit. What Else Do I Have to Keep in Mind? If the level control is defective, this is often due to a leaking air spring. In this case, the compressor works for a long time to maintain the level of the vehicle. To counteract a compressor malfunction due to overheating, the BMW 5 Series E61 monitors the air supply system with a time control in the vehicle system; however, if the compressor relay is defective, the shutdown won't work properly, causing the compressor to overheat and suffer irreparable damage. For this reason, the replacement of the corresponding relay is essential. The relay is included in the delivery. In addition, when changing the air-supply system it is also important to inspect both air springs for leakage; otherwise, the system may be damaged again.
