Die Entwicklung eines in den Hauptkomponenten wiederverwendbaren Transportsystems für die NASA begann 1972 bei North American Rockwell sowie einer Reihe weiterer Firmen. Das Gesamtgewicht des startbereiten Space Shuttle beträgt 2.055 t. Es kann eine Nutzlast von 30 t in eine Umlaufbahn bis zu 965 km über der Erde befördert werden. Der Orbiter-Prototyp, die Enterprise , wurde 1976 fertiggestellt. Die Enterprise diente zur Erforschung der Flug- und Landeeigenschaften in der Atmosphäre und bei der Entwicklung der weltraumtauglichen Fähre. Der erste Start eines Space Shuttle ins All erfolgte dann am 12. April 1981 mit der Raumfähre Columbia . Mit der Fertigstellung weiterer Orbiter ab 1983 intensivierte die NASA ihre wissenschaftlich-experimentellen und militärstrategischen Aktivitäten zusammen mit der US-Air Force beträchtlich. Es wurden Kommunikations- und Forschungssatelliten ins All transportiert, Reparaturen vor Ort durchgeführt sowie die amerikanische Weltraumstation aufgebaut und versorgt.
