The Shrine was built in 1531 after a local peasant saw a vision of a girl surrounded by light, asking that a church be built in her honour. She identified herself as the Virgin Mary and left an image of herself imprinted miraculously on his peasant cloak.  The shrine itself is a wonderful example of Spanish Baroque Art and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Roman Catholics in the world.
