Was ihn besonders macht ist, dass er nur in einem kleinen Gebiet des südlichen Marokko heimisch ist. Er ist eine endemische Art, die spontan zwischen den Bergketten des Atlasgebirges wächst. Hierbei handelt es sich um einen mediterranen Urwald in einem Biosphärenreservat der UNESCO. Dieser Baum ist immergrün und stachelig und erreicht nach einer Zeit von etwa 200 Jahren eine Höhe von 8-10 Metern. Er produziert kleine grüne Steinfrüchte, die Oliven ähneln und orange werden, wenn sie reif sind. In ihrem Inneren findet man zwei kleine Samenkerne, aus denen das Arganöl gepresst wird, das bereits seit Jahrtausenden zur Hautpflege verwendet wird.
