Part of Liberty's 'Aesthetic Renaissance' collection which celebrates the life and vision of the company's founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty. One of the original merchant adventurers Arthur Liberty introduced the fascinating, exotic design ideas he had encountered to the emerging aesthetic movement, of which Liberty became a central pillar. Supplementing the inspiration found in far flung locales are designs which derive from Arthur Liberty's love of the English countryside into which he escaped upon leaving the buzz of the London store. Inspired by Arthur and Emma Louise's visits to Africa and India this is a fun, playful design which crams as many animals as possible into one energetic space! But it is the way they are drawn which intrigues - in a very free but skilled looping continuous line. Then the forms are coloured very artfully with a loose ink wash in such a way that the linear and colour elements retain their own space and character. Very tastefully done indeed. On finest Tana lawn cotton with a three button cuff, classic collar, intelligent tailored regular fit.
This design is inspired by the Victorian practice of, as it were, honouring plants by painting them rather carefully and them framing the result in an elaborate border, especially as it relates to those which have therapuetic value. Amongst which, depicted here are: echinacea, ginkgo, gardenia and camellia. This piece was designed with an Italian printed house and printed in Italy. We wanted superior definition to show of all the little, fascinating details in the design and to make a feature of the rather subtle palette of soft varied blues, from Prussian through royal blue to cyan, madder pinks, carmine, ochre and radiant greys.
