Zoo Miami is the ideal place for an individual, a couple, or an entire family to spend a day. As a matter of fact, visitors can travel the world in one day! They will visit Africa, Asia, the Amazon, and Australia. Zoo Miami consists of 340 developed acres with more than 3,000 animals and over 1,200 plants and trees. Guests can feed giraffes, parrots, and a rhino; ride a camel; have animal encounters; meet the keepers during scheduled Meet the Zookeeper talks throughout the day; and much more. ZOO MIAMI EXHIBITS AMAZON & BEYOND The 27-acre, $50 million dollar Amazon and Beyond exhibit showcases Tropical American animals such as jaguars, the largest cats in the western hemisphere; giant river otters, which can grow up to six feet long; anacondas, the mightiest snakes on earth; and harpy eagles with talons the size of grizzly bear claws. A 48,000-gallon aquarium will give visitors of being in the Amazon as the water rises above head level. Surrounded by the Village Plaza, there are three areas: the Cloud Forest, Amazon Forest, and Atlantic Forest that house more than 600 animals from the region. Throughout the forests, children can have fun in animal-inspired playgrounds and the Fiesta Children’s Fountain, a fun area that shoots out water from a motion-sensor grid. An eating concession and gift shop are located in the Fiesta Village for patrons’ convenience. ASIA Hear the exotic sounds of wild Asia as you enter Asian River Life and encounter the small-clawed river otters, clouded leopards, and Asian water monitors. These ancient beasts, the national treasure of Indonesia, reach nearly 10 feet in length and weigh up to 300 pounds. THE AMERICAN BANKERS FAMILY AVIARY, WINGS OF ASIA Proclaimed a "best bet" by Sky Magazine and "unrivaled" by American Way Magazine, the American Bankers Family Aviary, Wings of Asia, the largest Asian-themed aviary in the Western hemisphere houses exotic, rare and endangered Asian birds representing about 85 species of more than 350 birds, including brilliantly colored pheasants, hornbills and pigeons, who show off their shimmering, iridescent plumage in a large, lush free-flight enclosure that provides the birds unencumbered flight. Tiny and large birds swoop overhead, perch on branches and even strut and stroll right by the visitor. Aquatic birds can be observed swimming above and below water from the air-conditioned Observation Center, and from behind two waterfalls from the Potamkin Conservation Center. The air is alive with beautiful bird songs, trickling brooks and five waterfalls. The Avian Dinosaur Connection Did you know that Tyrannosaurus Rex is a relative of the tiny mandarin duck? It is believed that dinosaurs became extinct some 65 million years ago. Although the magnificent T-Rex and agile velociraptor are no longer roaming our planet, many scientists believe there is one lineage of dinosaur thriving today. We call them birds. Visitors are encouraged to learn about the similarities and relationships between birds and dinosaurs in the pre-flight area in the Wings of Asia Temple Building. AFRICA Embark upon an African safari to observe gerenuk, pygmy hippos, giant eland, and Greater kudu. Reticulated giraffes, ostriches, Grant’s zebras and gazelles graze together on the African Plains. See the most beautiful eyelashes in nature up close while hand-feeding the giraffes at the Samburu Giraffe Feeding Station. Experience the forests of the Dark Continent as you encounter the family life of the powerful silverback lowland gorillas and the chimpanzees. Many other fascinating animals are to be discovered in Africa, including the critically endangered Black rhinoceros, whimsical wart hogs, Cape hunting dogs, okapi, and the threatened elephants. THE AMERICAS Meet the Andean condors, squirrel and howler monkeys, emerald tree boas, poison dart frogs, Cuban crocodiles, and Orinoco crocodiles from Central and South America. Iguanas, white lip anoles, and caiman lizards also lurk about. Giant Galápagos tortoises from Ecuador will amaze you. AUSTRALIA An international safari is not complete without a trip Down Under. Meet New Guinea’s singing dogs and Australia’s Matschie’s tree kangaroos, emu, and koalas. WILDE’S WORLD Dr. Wilde’s World provides hands-on interactive exhibits in a magnificent air-conditioned gallery. More than just displays to look at, this air-conditioned 7,000-square-foot exhibit invites visitors to touch and investigate a wide variety of artifacts and unique specimens. When searching for tiny marvels through a microscope, the adventures at Dr. Wilde’s World are sure to engage the explorer in all of us! A beautifully landscaped plaza that comes to life with large sculptures of animals from river habitats around the world surrounds the museum. Sounds of birds, insects and the river animals fill the air. Traveling exhibits included The World of Giant Insects, The Scoop on Poop, Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly, Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall, and National Geographic’s Crittercam: The World Through Animal Eyes During Halloween, the museum turns into Dr. Wilde’s Creepy House, which will make you scream with unparalleled chills and thrills. THE CHILDREN’S ZOO The Children’s Zoo is home to Humpy’s Camel Rides, which allow zoo visitors to sit high atop a graceful camel. Riders experience the traditional form of transportation used by the desert people of Africa and Asia for thousands of years. The South African meerkats are a show all unto themselves, and visitors can get a fun-filled, close-up view as these animals dig their tunnels, stand sentry and frolic together. Beautiful butterflies busily pollinate the flowers and shade trees in the Butterfly Garden where you can observe the stages of development in the life of a butterfly. Kids of all ages enjoy the Wildlife Conservation Carousel with 30 handcrafted replicas of endangered animals. Animal Tales shows feature local and exotic wildlife. And the Wacky Barn, allows guests to pet and feed sheep, miniature horses, goats, alpaca, and many more farm animals. Zoo Miami’s upcoming Florida: Mission Everglades exhibit will showcase some of our state’s most amazing and treasured natural wonders to our more than one million yearly visitors. Opening in 2016, Florida: Mission Everglades will immerse visitors in native Florida ecosystems including the Everglades, pine rock lands and coastal habitats. Signature Florida species represented may include the Florida panther, flamingos, wood storks, bald eagle, herons, pelicans, black bear, crocodiles, alligators, bay and coastal fishes, and all five of Florida’s native venomous snakes. Look for the giant Pacific octopus in its newly expanded habitat brimming with species found in the chilly depths of the Pacific Northwest. Eye the cuttlefish levitating in its tropical tank while the chambered nautilus jets through its inky dark display. From petite red octopuses to graceful seajellies, dive into the dazzling diversity of these mysterious ocean animals as Tentacles take hold at the New England Aquarium! ​ GIANT OCEAN TANK Enjoy 360-degree views of spectacular, four-story Caribbean coral reef teeming with more animals than ever before. In 2013, the iconic Giant Ocean Tank underwent a top-to-bottom, 21st century transformation, including windows that provide crystal-clear viewing opportunities: a vibrant, revitalized coral reef with more than 1, 000 fishes: and the Yawkey Coral Reef Center at the top fo the exhibit. The colorful Caribbean coral reef is home to sea turtles, eels and hundreds of tropical fishes of all sizes. SEALS AND SEA LIONS AT PLAY AT THE NEW BALANCE FOUNDATION MARINE MAMMAL CENTER The seals and sea lions are always at play. Watch ​ California sea lions​ ​ dart through the water and limber Northern fur seals​ ​ frolic in this beautiful open­air exhibit space, and find out about the challenges marine mammals face in the wild! ​ THE LARGEST SHARK AND RAY TOUCH TANK ON THE EAST COAST The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank features sharks and rays in a mangroved - themed tank surrounded by shallow edges and viewing windows, allowing visitors to experience a close encounter with these animals. Visitors to this exhibit can reach out and gently touch the backs of cownose rays. Atlantic rays and sharks as they swim gracefully through the crystal-clear water. The exhibit presents these incredible species in a way that highlights their importance in a healthy ocean ecosystem. It also emphasizes the valued of conserving essential coastal habitats, such as mangroves and lagoons. ATLANTIC HARBOR SEALS Visitors can enjoy the Atlantic harbor seals in their exhibit on the Aquarium plaza before buying admission tickets. Watch the seals swim, play and rest. Learn more about them and see some expert behaviors as they work with trainers during free training sessions throughout the day. BLUE PLANET ACTION CENTER This exhibit is part of the Aquarium’s recent top­-to-bottom, 21st century transformation. The exhibit area presents the serious challenges facing the oceans and showcases the Aquarium's global leadership in searching for solutions with a combination of interactive displays, interpretive presentations and small live animal exhibits. FEATURED EXHIBITS Science of Sharks Dive deep into the Science of Sharks with the newest exhibit at the New England Aquarium. Get up close to some small but mighty shark species from around the world. Hands-on activities illuminate the remarkable adaptations that give them an edge in the water, while the shark and ray touch tank lets you see — and feel! — these adaptations in action. Whale Watch Book front-row seats to view the ocean’s most fascinating and magnificent animals. The New England Aquarium Whale Watch conveniently departs from Central Wharf. As an Odyssey participant or an Observer you’ll receive admission to all shows and exhibits for that day Exhibits Shark Channel - When Miami Seaquarium® first opened in 1955, one of the main attractions was the Shark Channel. Today, guests are still entranced by these fearsome creatures. At the Shark Presentation, animal care specialists feed 200-pound sharks while explaining the various species of shark that exist worldwide. Tropical Reef - A favorite among park visitors, the Main Reef Aquarium features a 750,000-gallon saltwater aquarium teeming with reef fishes of every size, color and description. During the Reef Presentation, a diver accompanied by a group of Sea Trekers slowly work their way around the aquarium allowing visitors to watch as he/she hand-feeds the colorful tropical fish, large groupers, cobia, stingrays and moray eels. This presentation is accompanied by an informational narration. Manatees - At the Manatee Exhibit, guests come face-to-face with Florida's state marine mammal through poolside and underwater viewing areas. The Manatee Presentation provides an opportunity to learn about this fascinating and federally endangered animal and, more importantly, explains ways that guests can help save these gentle creatures of the sea. The manatees featured are part of the rescue and rehabilitation program at Miami Seaquarium®. Seal & Sea Lion - The Seal & Sea Lion Feeder Pool is adjacent to the The Golden Dome, a Miami landmark designed by architect Buckminster Fuller. Throughout the day, guests may enjoy the Seal and Sea Lion Exhibit, where they can observe Sea Lions and Seals as they frolic in the South Florida sun. Daily feeding sessions provide the opportunity for guests to feed some of these playful and boisterous mammals. Discovery Bay - View sea turtles, Florida birds and other wild-life in a natural mangrove forest environment. Explore our sea turtle exhibit to learn more about the 5 endangered sea turtle species that live in Florida waters. The sea turtles featured are part of the rescue and rehabilitation program at Miami Seaquarium®. Tropical Wings - View a variety of tropical birds, including Cockatiels, Macaws, Flamingos and our resident peacock, Peeps. Listen carefully and one of our parrots may just greet you with a subtle “hello.” Our animal keepers are on hand to answer any questions you may have and tell you more about the birds we have on exhibit. Tropical Wings is also home to our Stingray Touch Pool. Tropical Fish Aquariums - Explore the stunning variety of tropical marine life that inhabits the aquariums lining the walls of the Top Deck Dolphin area. These aquariums feature an array of interesting fish species with unique characteristics. Explore a number of ocean creatures from Florida Lobsters that live in local reefs to the invasive Red Lion Fish which was recently discovered in Caribbean waters but are originally from the Pacific and Indian oceans. Crocodile Flats - Crocodylus niloticus, also known as Nile Crocodiles, are the center of attention in their home at Discovery Bay's Upper Island, known as Crocodile Flats. This exhibit is made up of 32 tons of rock, 72 tons of beach sand, coconut and sable palm trees. The crocodiles are 6 ½ to 8 feet long and when fully grown can reach a size of 16 feet and nearly 1,000 pounds. Their main diet consists of chicken, fish, and rabbit. Stingray Exhibit - Meet the newest creatures to call Miami Seaquarium® their home - Southern and Cownose Stingrays who have taken up residence in a new 10,000 gallon touch pool, located inside the Tropical Wings Exhibit at Miami Seaquarium®. The new interactive exhibit, gives park guests the opportunity to feed and feel the gentle glide of these amazing creatures at their fingertips. Daily feeding sessions provide the opportunity for guests to feed the Stingrays. Sharky's Sky Trail - Sharky’s Sky Trail is a multi-level aerial obstacle course that provides a challenging and fun experience for the whole family. Park guests will be able to climb three stories in the air to face 18 challenges including rickety bridges, suspended ropes and other balancing obstacles. While safely harnessed in an overhead track, you walk the planks and tiptoe the tightropes 32 feet above Miami Seaquarium®! Salty's Pirate Playground - Batten down the hatches and walk the plank at Salty’s Pirate Playground, a wet/dry playground area. The attraction consists of a two-level pirate ship, 31 feet by 27 feet, located at the center of a shark filled moat. The pirate ship, featuring water blasters, cargo nets, padded areas and a spiral slide, entertains buccaneers ages two through twelve. Shows Top Deck Dolphin - Thrill to the high-flying antics of bottlenose dolphins as they perform breathtaking leaps and rolls. Guests thrill to the acrobatics of these agile marine mammals as they brave “rough waters” during the Rock n’ Roll Cruise. The Top Deck dolphins can be viewed anytime throughout the day from above and below the water. Keep your eyes open you might be able to spot a baby dolphin depending on when you visit. Golden Dome Sea Lion - Enjoy the hilarious adventures of Salty the Sea Lion and his Reef Rangers. This comedic playlet allows the sea lion and seal stars to show off their athletic and comedic abilities as they explore the reef searching for a littering diver. You, too, can be a Reef Ranger by helping protect our waters from trash and recycling whenever possible. Flipper Dolphin Show - The new Caribbean themed show, with a new set, music, and behaviors will let everyone know what Flipper has been up to in recent years. While the show demonstrates that Flipper’s surroundings may have changed, his core commitment to helping out when there is a need has not. In addition, a new historic display of images and nostalgia from the original TV show will be on exhibit at the entrance of Flipper's stadium. Killer Whale & Dolphin - There’s only one place where you’ll find Pacific white-sided dolphins living, playing and performing alongside a killer whale! Be amazed and delighted by Lolita the Killer Whale and her exotic Pacific white-sided dolphin friends as they show off their natural grace, beauty and intelligence through the special relationship between animal and trainer.
