There is lots to see and do at Edinburgh Castle. An arresting sight as it takes pride of place high up in the city, there is also much to be admired in the interior decor. The Great Hall is one of the main attractions, which serves as the chief place of state assembly and is thought to have been completed in the 16th century. It is 95 by 41 feet in size and has many impressive aspects such as the Renaissance roof.
There is much history to be learned by visit this national treasure, with the National War Museum Scotland, Prisons of War Exhibition, Royal Scots Regimental Museum, Scottish National War Memorial and Regimental Museum of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
Look out for the cannons to get an insight into the artillery which is a part of the castle’s military history. Mons Meg is capable of blasting a 150kg gunstone for two miles and was the latest pioneering technology when it was built. The One O’clock Gun is so named due to being fired at that time every day. It was established in 1861 to inform nearby ships of the time.
The Edinburgh Castle Crown jewels, known as The Honours of Scotland, are also a must-see due to their breathtaking beauty. They are on permanent display in the Crown Room.
St. Margaret’s is the castles chapel and is the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh. It was built in 1130 by David I for his mother and always contains fresh flowers. It has had bomb-proof vaulting since the 16th century, when it was used as a gunpowder store.
